Rose Post, longtime reporter and columnist for the Salisbury Post, died Thursday after a lengthy illness, the Post reported this morning.

She was 85.

Post was a fixture at the newspaper and in Rowan County.

She also was a legend in the North Carolina journalism world, winning many awards from the N.C. Press Association, the O. Henry Award from the Associated Press, the Ernie Pyle Award, and enshrinement in the N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame.

Her work focused around the ordinary people and life in Rowan County. In her travels for the newspaper, she met and interacted with people from all walks of life, from an Amish family who moved to Iredell County, to Bob and Elizabeth Dole, the Post reported.

Post retired from the newspaper in 2007, after 56 years as a reporter and columnist.
