The North Carolina Sheriff Chaplains Association has appointed Michael Taylor of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, to the position of Executive Director.
Taylor currently serves as president of the association, and has been a member since 1994. He attained a Master Level Chaplaincy in 1998 through the association’s accreditation program. He is also the senior pastor at Phaniels Baptist Church, Rockwell.
Taylor was named the National Sheriff’s Association Chaplain of the Year in 2003. He was the recipient of WSOC-TV’s Nine Who Care Award in 2001. He has also been honored with the Humanitarian Award from Chapel of the Four Chaplains and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award.
The North Carolina Sheriff Chaplains Association was organized in 1985 under the guidance of the late Chaplain Norman E. Mitchell and the late Sheriff Ottis F. Jones of Cumberland County. The State of North Carolina is the first state to organize a chaplaincy program to assist in providing the spiritual needs to those employed by the sheriff’s office. The focus of the sheriff’s chaplaincy is to provide assistance and resources for training individuals to serve as department and jail chaplains for city, county and state agencies.
The Sheild a Badge with Prayer program is a big part of NCSCA’s program. Taylor currently uses this program to place free Bibles into the hands of many law enforcement officers throughout North Carolina. The program also involves citizens from the community who pray daily for law enforcement officers and their families.
Taylor and his wife, Phyllis, have two sons: Michael and wife Amanda of Kannapolis, and Phillip and wife Lori of Lancaster, S.C. They have seven grandchildren.
