A Concord man is being held without bond at the Cabarrus County Jail after police say a man was shot to death over an argument about a cell phone.
Matthew Thomas Sherrill, 22, of 3017 Rockingham Court, Concord, was charged Thursday in connection with the shooting death of John Dion Wallace, 43, of 5407 River Falls Drive, Charlotte.
At about 5:35 p.m. Thursday, police and emergency personnel responded to a report of a gunshot victim at 700-3 N.C. Highway 49 in Concord. When officials arrived, Wallace was transported to CMC-NorthEast, where he later died from an apparent gunshot wound, according to a press release.
The shooting stemmed from an argument over a cell phone Wallace bought from the suspect, according to the release.
Friday afternoon, the neighborhood where the shooting took place was quiet, with no signs of the violence that occurred the evening before. The shooting took place at a mobile home park in the 700 block of N.C. Highway 49, the neighborhood having a row of mailboxes showing eight homes in the community.
One resident of the community who didn’t want to be identified said when she came home Thursday night officers had blocked her driveway and she had to park in her yard.
Concord Police Maj. Allen Overcash said Sherrill and Wallace had been acquaintances for a while, but police had not yet determined for how long.
He said the shooting took place outside the home of a mutual acquaintance.
Sherrill was arrested without incident.
“He heard we were looking for him and came to the police department to see us,” Overcash said.
Sherrill was developed as a suspect very early in the case after police interviewed multiple witnesses, Overcash said.
Overcash said Wallace was shot in the torso. It was apparently a single gunshot wound, but detectives were waiting for an autopsy to confirm that, Overcash said.
He declined to say if police recovered the gun or what type of gun was used. He did say detectives found at least one bullet shell.
“It was some kind of disagreement over a cell phone the victim had purchased,” Overcash said. “And we don’t know all the details yet, but from the information we have that’s what started it.”
Sherrill’s next scheduled court appearance is set for Monday.
This is the Concord Police Department’s second homicide investigation this year.
