Concord will host delegates from nine states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia in September for the 2012 Democratic National Convention, which is expected to bring more than $6 million to Cabarrus County.
The Democratic National Convention Committee CEO Steve Kerrigan announced hotel assignments for the approximately 6,000 delegates to the 2012 Democratic National Convention and the headquarters hotels Tuesday.
Concord will host delegates from Alaska, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Texas and West Virginia in addition to the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
"We're excited to welcome the DNC delegations," Concord Mayor Scott Padgett said in a statement. "Thousands more will join us on Labor Day for the family festival kick-off event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The people of Concord work and play hard. There is always a feeling of excitement, energy, and high expectations in the community. We like to call it High Performance Living, and we know the fine DNC delegates will be excited to come back for more."
Local officials estimate the local economic impact will be about $6 million based on the number room nights and the average rate for those rooms during the four days of the convention. The estimate was calculated by an event impact estimating tool from Destination Marketing Association International.
"The Democratic National Convention will have significant economic impact and will offer us the opportunity to showcase Cabarrus County as a true visitor destination," said Donna Carpenter, president and chief executive officer of the Cabarrus County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Cabarrus County hotels hosting delegates are clustered at Bruton Smith Boulevard located at Exit 49 off of Interstate 85. The delegation accomodation list includes two of Griffin Stafford’s Concord properties - Hilton Garden Inn and Wingate by Wyndam.
The Embassy Suites Concord will host approximately 500 delegates from Michigan, Maryland and Rhode Island in conjunction with the Courtyard by Marriott Concord and the Residence Inn Concord.
The Hilton Garden Inn Concord will host delegates from the District of Columbia and Alaska.
The Wingate Inn Concord will host delegates from Kansas.
Great Wolf Lodge was chosen to host Montana and Texas delegates. Some Texas delegates also will stay at the Spring Hill Suites Concord along with the delegation from New Mexico.
Sleep Inn and Suites will host delegates from Puerto Rico. The Hampton Inn & Suites Concord will host West Virginia.
Cabarrus County is one of five high priorty security zones designated by the National Security Agency, according to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. That’s because the DNC will come to the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord on Labor Day to celebrate the Carolinas, Virginia and the South.
The Hilton Charlotte Center City and the Westin Charlotte will be the DNC headquarters hotels with the base of operations for the DNCC, The Democratic National Committee and Obama for America located there. The hotels will be used for official business and for a meeting place for convention organizers and DNC and OFA staff.
The DNCC began securing rooms in local hotels in spring of 2011, shortly after Charlotte was selected to host the convention. The DNCC has contracted more than 15,000 rooms in 150 hotels. Delegations will use 6,700 rooms in 56 hotels in the five zones.
