To complement their new CrossFit program, the SportsCenter Athletic and Fitness Club in Concord is now offering health and fitness assessments and consultation through Vitality Medical Wellness Institute.
“We have great success in improving body composition and achieving significant weight loss, as well as reversing chronic disease,” said Dr. Jeffery Galvin, MD.
Galvin, who is the Medical Director for Vitality, has seen a lot of success through the health programs that Vitality prescribes and offers to their patients. Galvin also points out that many patients who have successfully followed their recommendations have been able ease to off their medication.
“We routinely get patients off their blood pressure, cholesterol, anti-depression and diabetes meds,” Galvin said.
Two of the top recommendations that Vitality prescribes for their patients are CrossFit and use of the Paleo Diet, which is an all-natural diet that emphasizes all-natural and non-processed meats, fruits, vegetables and nuts, while avoiding dairy and starches. Clinical Coordinator Candice Case has seen the success of both programs when combined.
“On average, men have lost 10 pounds and five percent body fat, while women have lost about five pounds and three percent body fat,” Case said.
Along the recommendations above, Vitality takes time to get to know each patient and the problems they are having with their health.
A detailed analysis of each patients social, medical and family history, along with a physical exam and neurocognitive testing (to assess memory, processing speed and cognitive ability) and extensive lab and hormonal testing help to decide the best recommendations for each patient.
Two of the tools used to determine ones health and fitness are the DEXA Scan and VO2max Test.
The DEXA Scan is a full body scan that measures a person’s muscle mass, body fat and bone density. Unlike the Body Mass Index (BMI), which measures if a person is overweight based on a calculation of their height and weight, the DEXA Scan tell doctors the exact amount of fat and lean muscle and the exact location on the body.
The second test, the VO2max test, measures “an individual's aerobic capacity and performance. It involves riding a bike or running on a treadmill while wearing a mask and heart rate monitor,” Galvin said. “Our equipment measures both ventilated oxygen and CO2 during exercise. At the end of the test we are able to determine the maximal amount of oxygen a patient can utilize (their VO2max). That number represents how fit an individual is.”
The VO2 Max ranges are based on age and sex. In the end a person’s fitness level gets stratified from very poor up to superior.
“Ninety-five percent of the CrossFitters we have tested have scored superior on their VO2max,” Galvin said. “Furthermore, when we do the strength assessments, the CrossFitters are able to perform the baseline workout in a fraction of the time of everyone else. The CrossFitters are fitter both aerobically and strength wise than anyone else we have tested. This is why we are such believers in CrossFit.”
