Concord is participating in North Carolina’s Urban Archery season for the second time.
Hunting and fishing in North Carolina is regulated by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. The commission gives municipalities the option of participating in a specified Urban Archery season by submitting a letter of intent to participate in the season along with a map clearly defining the area to be included in the season.
North Carolina’s 2012 Urban Archery season began on Jan. 14 and ends on Feb. 18.
Bow hunting is only allowed on lots two acres or larger and the hunter has to be on his or her own property or have written permission from the property owner. Bow hunting is not allowed within 250 feet of any dwelling or occupied structure.

Research Campus continues Learn and Live film series

From staff reports
The North Carolina Research Campus will continue its Learn and Live Film Series this year with showings of "Food Stamped" on Feb. 20 and "Living Proof" on April 16.
Admission to both movies is free. The screenings will be at 7 p.m. in the events room of the David H. Murdock Research Institute at the Research Campus. Each movie will be followed by a discussion led by scientists and community partners.
"Food Stamped" is an hour-long documentary that follows Shira and Yoav Potash as they take the Food Stamp Challenge of eating a healthy and well-balanced diet on a food stamp budget, which equates to $21 per week or $1 per meal. The experience takes them from shopping trips and discussions about rationing their weekly food allotment into the policies and politics of the food stamp system.
"Living Proof" is based on the 1998 book "The Making of Herceptin, A Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer" by Robert Bazell.
The movie, which was released in 2008 on the Lifetime Network, follows the true story of Dr. Dennis Slamon, a UCLA oncologist and researcher. From 1988 to 1996, Slamon developed Herceptin (trastuzumab) as a treatment for breast cancer and continued working with the drug through clinical trials. The movie stars Harry Connick Jr. and other actors including Angie Harmon, Swoosie Kurts, Bernadette Peters and Amanda Bynes.
The Live and Learn Film Series started on Oct. 24, which was National Food Day, with a showing of the movie "Forks Over Knives." The series is designed to inspire a community conversation about health and nutrition. Additional 2012 dates will be announced later this year.

Camp Bow Wow hosting 'adopt-a-thon'

Camp Bow Wow Concord will host a "Doggy Adopt-a-Thon" from 4-6:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at 8010 Myint Lane in Concord.
“Every February we play matchmaker for clients and homeless hounds,” said Cassie Scofield, Camp Bow Wow owner.
The event aims to raise awareness for a pack of worthy canine causes, including Kreitzer’s Critter Corral Puppy Rescue, Catering to Cats and Dogs and Family Addition Dog Rescue of Charlotte, all of whom will be showcasing adoptable dogs.
There will also be a silent auction and raffle, along with free appetizers and Champagne.
Scofield said the “Hearts for Hounds” supply drive has been a staple technique used to collect product donations and will be featured again. Attendants can take a paper heart for their keeping and return the rescue’s “wish list” item written on the back. All visitors will receive a doggy bag with treats and information about the organizations.
“Whether it’s money, supplies or exposure, these groups need our help,” Scofield said.
