A man charged with murder, first-degree burglary and robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with an East Spencer homicide was arrested Friday in Kannapolis.
Gary A. Cureton, 54, was arrested at about 1:30 p.m. after Rowan County Sheriff’s Office detectives investigated a home on Concord Lake Road in Kannapolis, according to a press release.
The investigation began after the East Spencer Police Department responded to 110 Spencer St., East Spencer, for a welfare check.
East Spencer and Rowan Sheriff’s Office deputies responded, and discovered the body of Joan Marie Know Lark, 49, who was lying in the floor of a downstairs bedroom inside the residence. Lark appeared to have been the victim of a fatal assault. Lark’s six grandchildren were upstairs asleep during the assault and found their grandmother dead, according to a press release.
Detectives were able to determine the assault occurred inside the residence in the early morning hours, before the grandchildren woke up.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division responded and began the investigation along with the North Carolina SBI and East Spencer Police Department.
During the investigation, detectives learned that Cureton was Lark’s ex-boyfriend, according to the press release.
During the booking process Cureton complained of medical issues and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Chad Moose (704)216-8687 or Det. Adam Loflin (704) 216-8686.
