Support Education Newspapers In Education (NIE) is a nationwide program whose purpose is to increase literacy of children by using the newspaper as a teaching tool. More than 700 newspapers in the US & Canada participate in the NIE program throughout the school year.

The Independent Tribune NIE program provides teachers with newspapers for their classroom each week, access to lesson plans in conjunction with the newspaper & serialized stories published in the newspaper at no cost to the teachers or the students. The Independent Tribune absorbs the costs of printing & distributing the newspapers for the program & relies on support from area businesses so educators may participate in the program at no cost.

Sponsorship

NIE is funded through various means depending on the resources available in the community. Subscriptions may be purchased by the school administration, by families of students or through fundraisers. These subscriptions are usually offered at reduced rates. Local businesses & corporations may also provide funding through a tax-deductible donation or throughClick here for information grants & awards.

The Independent Tribune participates in NIE by raising money through various fund-raising events & by obtaining sponsorships from local businesses. If you know of a business or corporation that would like to provide the schools of Cabarrus County & Kannapolis City with newspapers, please contact Jessie DeMars, NIE Coordinator at the Independent Tribune at:
